If I'm sold an invalid ticket, do I have to pay penalty fare? (UK)?

Bought ticket from machine specifying route (not via London) and that I have a network railcard. Conductor said ticket not valid as network railcard didn't apply on that route. I refused to pay penalty fare as I bought ticket in good faith, was honest about route / railcard, and don't expect machine to be wrong! Whose problem is this?
