Command line for creating a primary partition 450GB?

trying to create a primary partition on an external 500 gb hard drive but I keep getting 1 gb partitions, whenever I stipulate the partition size I get an error message "the arguments specified for this command are not valid". I have formatted the disc so space isn't the issue. any help would be greatly appreciated.
